 "Hills Like White Elephants"

In this story. the issues that plague the couple is the issue of talking, not communicating. This story highlights a conversation between an American man and his girlfriend. These two are just normally speaking, but neither of them are truly communicating with each other which shows the rift between the two. They both talk, but do not really listen or understand their points of view. The man is trying to convince his girlfriend to have an operation, which I believe is an abortion. Something he says is that he loves her, and that if she does the abortion then everything will go back to the way it was before with them. While the girl is being told this, she is indecisive and considers having the abortion just so the man will stop talking. These two characters just dance around each other and do not actually ever address the issue at hand, hence they are not really communicating and just talking. These issues are realistic because there are many couples that have trouble communicating with each other and listening. Relationships do not work without communication. Towards the end, this couple gets worse, because at this point the girl just wants to get the operation so the man will stop talking.

"A Rose for Emily"

In this story, the conflict that stood out the most to me was one between Emily Grierson and Homer Barron. The problem with this relationship was the fact that Emily fell in love with Homer because of the death of her father. She could not truly accept it and get over it so she tries to deny it by loving Homer. She was also abandoned by the man who the townsfolk believed she was supposed to marry. Emily also feels the need to control everything in her life. This need eventually leads to her killing Homer with the poison. This issue is definitely realistic as grief can lead people to do many things that they are not so proud of. It can also lead to insanity which is something her great aunt suffered from. In the end the relationship between Emily and Homer got worse.

"Araby"

For this story, the issue is actually just between someone and his self. He is having an inner conflict with his real self and also his imaginary self. He is having a conflict with himself because he is in love with this girl and thinks that she is the one. He also imagines what his life would be like with her in the future. This issue is also very realistic as we like to imagine our lives with someone we love or think that we can build a future with them. We like to think of scenarios and situations where we end up depending on them or solving problems with them. At the end of the story, this issue gets worse because he eventually realizes that this whole time, this perfect reality with this girl he loves is just an imagination in his head and says that his eyes were burning with anguish and anger.

"Cathedral"

In this story, the issue is between the narrator and Robert. The conflict is that Robert is jealous of his wife's past partners. This problem between the 2 causes a rift in the relationship but, towards the end their relationship actually improves because they start building a cathedral together. Doing this together gives Robert and the narrator an opportunity to bond and improve their relationship. A problem like this is very realistic and common in fact as having a partner that had other people date them can be a common insecurity as you may feel that you are not as good as them or other issues similar to that. They also warm up to each other and begin to feel more like they know each other.

"The Chrysanthemums"

In this story, the problem is between Elisa and the tinker. The tinker just wants Elisa's business but Elisa wants to have an actual physical connection with the tinker. An issue like this is very common in the real world. The tinker in this story only wats Elisa's business, he wants nothing to do with her actual person. On the other hand, Elisa wants an actual connection with the tinker because she likes him. This is also an example of unrequited love. Elisa is just being used for her business but does not even realize it. This issue is definitely worsened by the end of the story because it ends with Elisa crying.
